“Hvar” can mean the island, Hvar Town or a ferry port somewhere else on the island. That distinction is the source of most booking mistakes. Foot passengers often want Hvar Town; travellers bringing a car usually need the Stari Grad car-ferry route.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Choose a passenger ferry to Hvar Town when you are travelling without a car and staying near the main harbour. Choose the Split–Stari Grad car ferry when the vehicle must travel with you. Always check the arrival port before payment.

From Split
Split offers the widest choice. The important split is between fast passenger services to Hvar Town and the car ferry to Stari Grad. Do not assume every result carries vehicles.

Seasonal passenger routes can connect Dubrovnik, Korčula and Hvar Town. Frequency changes by season, so search the exact date rather than relying on a generic weekly timetable.
From the airport
Split Airport is not the ferry port. Allow a separate transfer into Split and enough buffer before the ferry, especially during the summer travel peak.
