THE STORY IN PLAIN SIGHT

Someone built a sphinx in Zadar and the story got stranger.

Zadar’s sphinx is neither Egyptian nor ancient. That disappointment lasts about ten seconds; the local obsession is stranger and more human.

Why does this matter?

Zadar’s sphinx was created in the early 20th century and became wrapped in stories about its maker, Giovanni Smirich, his wife Attilia and supposed wish-granting powers. Some romantic details remain difficult to prove. What is certain is the object itself: a monumental local sphinx with unusual human-like fingers and a history that has attracted legends of love and hidden treasure.

Separate the romance from the record, then enjoy both. Cities need legends even when the paperwork refuses to cooperate.

What should you look for?

Get the body and those unusual front limbs in the frame. Do not rush the photograph. First place the detail back inside the street, harbour or landscape that made it possible.

How to find it

  1. Leave the historic peninsula for Brodarica and find the large concrete-and-stone sphinx in the garden area of the former Villa Attilia.
  2. Use the map as a final check, then look for the physical detail described above.
  3. Allow enough time to notice the surroundings instead of treating this as a pin to collect.

Is it worth the detour?

Yes—if you prefer a place with a story to another interchangeable viewpoint. This is not the biggest sight in Zadar. It is the one that makes the destination less generic.
