THE STORY IN PLAIN SIGHT

They cut a hiding place for military boats into the island.

Vis spent decades hiding military purpose inside limestone. The tunnel is not scenery laid over history; it is history drilled into the island.

Why does this matter?

For decades Vis was one of Yugoslavia’s most strategically controlled Adriatic islands. Military infrastructure was built into the landscape itself, including sea tunnels used to shelter naval craft. Today the dark opening at Parja is an extraordinary leftover from that closed chapter of the island.

Do not improvise access or enter unsafe areas. The mouth of the tunnel already tells the story.

What should you look for?

Do not enter unsafe or restricted areas. The entrance itself is the find. Do not rush the photograph. First place the detail back inside the street, harbour or landscape that made it possible.

How to find it

  1. Head toward Parja Bay, northwest of Vis town. Look for the large rectangular sea-level tunnel entrance cut directly into the rock.
  2. Use the map as a final check, then look for the physical detail described above.
  3. Allow enough time to notice the surroundings instead of treating this as a pin to collect.

Is it worth the detour?

Yes—if you prefer a place with a story to another interchangeable viewpoint. This is not the biggest sight in Vis. It is the one that makes the destination less generic.
