Why does this matter?
The medieval fortress of St Michael played an important role during the Venetian siege of Zadar in 1345–46. Its difficult position made it useful for reconnaissance, and the fort was probably built on older defensive foundations.
Carry water and start early. A strategic lookout is supposed to make you work for the view.
What should you look for?
Take water and avoid the hottest part of the day. Stay on safe paths around the ruins. Do not rush the photograph. First place the detail back inside the street, harbour or landscape that made it possible.
How to find it
- From Preko, follow the marked road or trail uphill toward the ruins of St Michael’s fortress. Go prepared for a proper climb, especially in summer.
- Use the map as a final check, then look for the physical detail described above.
- Allow enough time to notice the surroundings instead of treating this as a pin to collect.
Is it worth the detour?
Yes—if you prefer a place with a story to another interchangeable viewpoint. This is not the biggest sight in Ugljan. It is the one that makes the destination less generic.
