THE STORY IN PLAIN SIGHT

The torpedo story is still standing on the waterfront.

Rijeka’s industrial past is not decorative. It is concrete, salt-stained and responsible for changing naval warfare.

Why does this matter?

Rijeka’s torpedo story began in the 1860s with Giovanni Luppis and Robert Whitehead. The surviving launch station dates from the 1930s and remains one of the clearest physical traces of the city’s globally important industrial heritage.

The surviving ramp is rough and exposed. That honesty makes it more valuable than a polished plaque downtown.

What should you look for?

The industrial ruin is the clue. The global story is what it unlocks. Do not rush the photograph. First place the detail back inside the street, harbour or landscape that made it possible.

How to find it

  1. Head west from central Rijeka to the former Torpedo factory area and find the reinforced-concrete launch station on the waterfront.
  2. Use the map as a final check, then look for the physical detail described above.
  3. Allow enough time to notice the surroundings instead of treating this as a pin to collect.

Is it worth the detour?

Yes—if you prefer a place with a story to another interchangeable viewpoint. This is not the biggest sight in Rijeka. It is the one that makes the destination less generic.
