Why does this matter?
Local tradition identifies Mljet with Homer’s Ogygia and this cave with the story of Odysseus and Calypso. That identification is a legend rather than proven archaeology, but it has become part of the island’s cultural imagination. The cave’s sea entrance makes it easy to see how the story took hold.
Come for the cave, but respect the approach and sea conditions. Myth is not safety equipment.
What should you look for?
Stay on safe access points and respect sea conditions. You do not need to enter the water. Do not rush the photograph. First place the detail back inside the street, harbour or landscape that made it possible.
How to find it
- Follow the marked approach toward Odysseus Cave near Babino Polje. The find is the dramatic coastal cave opening connected to the open sea.
- Use the map as a final check, then look for the physical detail described above.
- Allow enough time to notice the surroundings instead of treating this as a pin to collect.
Is it worth the detour?
Yes—if you prefer a place with a story to another interchangeable viewpoint. This is not the biggest sight in Mljet. It is the one that makes the destination less generic.
